Nokia n95 Rotate Me : How to Sign - Install Guide

By andy | February 11, 2008

Certificate ErrorThe best suggestion I can give for installing the Rotate Me application is wait until it has been fully tested, removed from beta test release and signed by Symbian. For the impatient, a guide for self signing this application is available (below). Note I can not guarantee your handset will be safe from harm! Proceed at your own risk!

The aim of this tutorial is to install an unsigned application on to a Nokia n95, the same principle can be used to install any unsigned software on the Symbian platform. You will need the following:Nokia n95

Step One - Sign up
Register for an account at SymbianSigned. You must use a “non-free” email address (no @yahoo.com, @googlemail.com, @hotmail.com).

Step Two - Log in
Login to your account at SymbianSigned.

Step Three - Reflection
Admire how simple step one and step two are (that’s the end of the simple steps)!

Step Four - Generate a Request
Install and run the “Dev Cert Request Tool”, this is pretty simple to go through. Follow each step filling in the correct details.

  1. Give the Symbian Developer Certificate Request file (.csr) a name - anything you like, click Next
  2. We are creating a private key, so set Publisher ID available to no
    • Give the private key file a name - anything you like
    • Give the private key file a password - anything you like (don’t forget this)
    • Click Next
  3. Fill in your personal information, click Next
  4. Click the “…” next to the IMEI input box
    • Fill in your IMEI (*#06# from your handset as you’ll know) Click OK
    • With all the “Application Capabilities” selected, click Add
    • Click Next
  5. Click Finish.

We have just created a certificate request file (.csr) this file is used in conjunction with www.symbiansigned.com to gain our certificate file (.cer) which will sign our application.

Step Five - Generate a Certificate
Going back to your Symbian Signed account, ensure you’re logged in and complete the following processes…

  1. Click on the “My Symbian Signed” tab of the web site
  2. Click “Open Signed” in the left navigation menu and then “Request”
  3. Complete the “anti-robot” code and browse for your certificate request file (.csr)
  4. Click Send
  5. Click Download and save your newly created certificate.

Congratulations - you have just created your own certificate, now to sign the application. Remember this certificate is only valid for one IMEI - the one you entered when creating your certificate request.

Step Six - Sign the Application
Extract the SignSiS archive and run the SignSisUI.exe application.

  1. Select the unsigned application which you are wanting to sign
  2. Select the correct certificate file which you have just created & downloaded (.cer)
  3. Select the correct key file for the generated certificate (.key)
  4. Fill in the correct password for the key file
  5. Click “!Sign It!”

Your application is now signed and ready to be transfered to your handset and installed! Don’t forget to transfer and install the accelerometer plugin first.

  1. Symbian Signed bunch have been inundated with requests and have now stopped issuing them to the general public.
You now need a publisher ID, which costs $200 a year. So I think I’ll pass on that one.

Hopefully they will get their fingers out and sort the signing.

  2. Cool link, I thought I would check it out, as there have been so many comments and people wanting to know how to install etc… not that I have had any problem with mine.

  3. on step 4 number 2, it says in symbiansign that on with a publisher ID is allowed.. i dont knw wat to do after that.. pls help

  4. As you are creating a private key, you can set “Publish ID Available” to NO.

A publisher ID is required for signing applications that are going to be released (publically) and therefore requires to be authorised by Symbian.

The idea of a private key is for developers to test with, the point of requiring Symbian to authorise applications which are being published is to stop / reduce the number of harmful applications (viri etc.)

  5. how to get this publisher id…now its not possible for me..

  6. You should be able to sign your applications with the Open Signed Online service. The link to do this is: https://www.symbiansigned.com/app/page/public/openSignedOnline.do

This is IMEI restricted but doesn’t require a publisher ID.

  7. This is so frustrating.

I followed to guide but I needed a Publisher ID so I had to stop.

The I tried the Open Signed Online method which said that my email address was invalid because it didn’t match the UID.

    What can I do?

All I want is to use this application but I’ve already had to set up about 4 different accounts.
