Nokia N95 Accelerometer Application(s) - Light Sabre
By andy | January 10, 2008
Strange blog post this one, but I felt I had to!
I use all kinds of software on my Nokia N95 - generally this is useful software (email clients, podcast applications etc). Not any longer, I have to admit - I am a geek but I’m not a Star Wars fan. In fact - I’ve never seen any of them. Of course I know what a light sabre is - and when I found an application what turns the Nokia N95 into a light sabre, I HAD to take a closer look.
I am a bit slow on this one (as usual - some would say), but the basic idea is: you install a small plugin application which ‘unlocks’ the accelerometer within the Nokia n95. Once this is installed you can unleash the power of the accelerometer within applications, these can be either created yourself or downloaded (a couple of examples are included in this article).
Next I installed the Light Sabre application (version 1.5) - once installed, it’s pretty simple; start the application and start playing (childhood revisited)! As I am sure you can guess it works as follows, move the phone from side to side and you get a “whoosh” noise. Jolt the phone and you get a “strike” noise. During the whole procedure the screen flashes green/white (by default; but this can be changed), also the phone contently vibrates (adds to the effect)!
A quick search revealed another application available was the Moving Ball application, very simple - but demonstrates the accelerometer quite well.
A further search found there was a game available too: Acceler-Invaders - well worth downloading very difficult to play!
Remember to install the accelerometer plugin application before you install any applications which use the accelerometer.
Does the Apple iPhone have anything quite so fun as a Light Sabre or Acceler-Invaders? I think not….
